This web page describes how I installed RedHat Linux 7.2 on a friend's Sony VAIO PCG-SRX77.

  1. Luckily I have a Sony USB floppy drive, which came with my VAIO Z505HE, so I can boot from that into the Linux install.
  2. I downloaded the file rh72_pcmcia_nousb.img from this page on installing RedHat.
  3. I wrote that image file to the floppy under Linux as follows:
       [[email protected] was]# dd if=rh72_pcmcia_nousb.img of=/dev/fd0
       2880+0 records in
       2880+0 records out
  4. Next I made a pcmcia driver disk using the file pcmciadd.img, which is included in the images directory of the RedHat install CD 1:
  5. Then I booted, but the USB floppy disk wasn't detected AFTER boot, because the image was compiled without usb support! Doh!
  6. So I tried the instructions at this guy's page.
