I wanted to let you know that Penn State has made me an official offer
in writing.  It is an Associate Professorship with tenure, and a
starting salary of $75,000.  For at least the first three years, the
offer includes a named Shaffer Associate Professorship with a
$12,500/year additional stipend.  I will also receive startup funds of
$100,000 for research, equipment, and moving expenses.  The teaching
is 1-1 for the first 2 years, then 1-2 for at least the next 8 years.
I have until January 31, 2005 to decide.

I am still very interested in the possibility of a job at ...,
especially if you're able to make a competitive offer.

I received a call from UIUC that they will be making an offer, and
want to make an offer with tenure, but don't know if that will be
possible.  I also received the official offer letter from Penn State
today.  I'll summarize what the terms are for you, in case it is
helpful for you to know them.
